Once, way back in the non-sucky days at the bookstore, there was such a snarl on the GWB that traffic was backed up on the highway just outside of our B&N. A goodly number of folks decided to spend a bit of time in the store rather than sit in traffic.

I made my way to the front of the store to see if any of these unexpected customers needed assistance. One man caught my eye: he was browsing the bargain fixtures near cashwrap. He wore white cotton gloves, sunglasses, a hat, and a surgical mask. "Geez," thought I. "I don't know what the poor guy thinks he's going to catch in freakin' Paramus..." I made eye contact, smiled and nodded, just in case he wanted my brilliant customer service. He nodded back. I walked on, continuing my sweep of the front of store. It wasn't until a few minutes later that I realized who the strange man was.

And that, my friends, was my brief encounter with Michael Jackson.

I have no idea what went on in his head, but he was clearly a troubled soul. I hope he's found peace and that his kids can find normalcy.
