I was going to make a Flag Cake for Saturday's gathering. Y'know, blueberries and piped frosting for the field of stars, raspberries and yet more piped frosting for the stripey bits. Thing is, I've been running like mad all week; the first chance I had to go to the grocery store was after tonight's 7:30 kickboxing class.

Two things about shopping at quarter past nine on July 3rd: first, the store is nearly empty. Save for people restocking shelves and, incidentally, parking a hugenormous u-cart directly in front of the kitty litter I needed, it was a rather relaxing shopping experience. second, everything is utterly picked over. You really have to take what you can get, especially when it comes to produce. Produce, I might add, that I need to make the Flag Cake.

There were raspberries left: two plastic tubs' worth that looked as if they had served to boost a short shopper who wanted to reach the shiny, pretty raspberries waaay up at the top of that four foot tall display. Blueberries there were none, nor blackberries (which I figured would do in a pinch). Strawberries were stacked to either side of the gaping hole where the other berries once were. I needed berries of some sort, so I snagged two containers. And oh, such sad, bruised and droopy strawberries they are. I can make this work, though. My plan is to seek out berries on the way home from work tomorrow. Failing that, I'll cut the sad and droopy bits off of the strawberries. Instead of a Flag Cake, I shall fashion a Fireworks Cake, arranging the strawberry slices into dynamic and explodey patterns.

Also, there were no scallions left. I need them for the marinade for the balsamic mustard chicken. I almost bought leeks instead. But speaking of that marinade, why the hell did I write balsamic vinaigrette on the shopping list I gave to Don (who did the first run earlier tonight: hot dogs, ground beef, buns, etc) when what I really wanted was balsamic vinegar?

I feel: exhaustedjust plain worn out

Usually weekends are awesome, from Friday through Sunday. This next Friday, a friend and I are having a museum marathon, and I'm gonna make a day trip to Philly one of these days, but other than that, free.

I threw it together quickly, but there you are.

Your flag cake is a beauty! And what are the odds of both of us making a flag cake within days of each other? Okay, Independence Day, blah blah blah. Still... we are SO cake sisters.

I really hope mine turns out as well as yours!
