I'm in Holiday Mode at work. Work, for those who don't know, is at a bookstore. Retail generally bites, and at the holidays that biteage is exponential. Still, so far I've got heaps of energy and a Pollyanna-ish enthusiasm* because, hey - I'm selling books. Books are love. Books are joy. Books are all manner of happy.

Anyway, yesterday I helped a very nice older woman with a couple of different books. We chatted a bit as I took her to the sections and placed the books in her hands. She was delighted. Smiling, she told me I'd been very helpful and so very nice, and capped it with this remark: "You're like Rachael Ray!"

I wasn't sure what to think. I mean, I'm fairly certain this very sweet lady meant that as a compliment. I like Rachael Ray (though I could do without the cutesy language), so it's all good with me. But there are so many folks who can not stand Rachael Ray, and a goodly number of professional chefs who regard her with naught but disdain. If nothing else, it's certainly the most unusual compliment I've received... next to, "You have excellent diction!"

*I expect this energy will dwindle markedly and the enthusiasm will wear thin come the end of next week. Shoppers, in general, will be less amiable. Many will be outright mean. A rare handful will be lovely.

When I did my time as a barista at the cult of the green apron, I was told by a few people I was like the Mario Batali of coffee. I wasn't sure how to take it either.

Rachael is high energy, happy, bubbly, and has a great smile. Take it as the ultimate compliment. How would the lady know what your cooking is like? heheheheh

Hey! I know I have complimented your diction at least once...it was sincere! Your diction is impressive! Anyone who doesn't think so can suck my diction! (sorry, it was there)

Can you shoot me an email and tell me when you're working next week? It occurs to me that I need to stop at a bookstore pre-Xmas, and a quick hug from you would make the trip even more productive.

hee!!!! Actually, the diction compliment I was thinking of was from an utter stranger.

I'll send an email with my hours posthaste.

I have a feeling she mean it in reference to your enthusiasm! Which is cool!

By the way -- I'll be there to help you out on Tuesday -- just so you know. Oh and you do have excellent diction. :)
