We hit a bear.

It was on the way to a CP rehearsal. Lots of back roads, lots of undeveloped, wooded land. We were almost to Rte. 23 when a black bear darted out of the woods, right in front of our car. Don tried to avoid it, slowed as much as he could with someone right behind us, but we clipped the poor thing. The impact was horrible. We pulled over, as did the car behind us (and he immediately called the police, thank heavens, since I certainly wasn't thinking about anything but the fact we'd just slammed our car into a bear). An officer was out there in short order. He made sure we were all uninjured, then took a look at the car, which was undamaged.

The bear had dragged itself into the woods, but wasn't able to get very far. Fortunately, we were allowed to go before the police had to do what they had to do.

But I cried for an hour, almost non-stop, and am crying again because I feel completely awful. I keep thinking of how confused the poor thing was, and the pain it was in. I hate this. I know it's one of those things. I know it happens. But that doesn't make my heart hurt any the less.

wow, this sucks
I feel: sickheartsick

I'm sorry. But even though it makes it harder, I think it's good that you care.

I had a similar experience with a deer once... though I wasn't as fortunate in my situation.

Oh my God, Kel, I'm so sorry. It is one of those things that happens, but you're also allowed to feel exactly as you feel.... I hope you find a way to process this -- I don't know about you, but I always have to do something catharic -- and all my hugs to you and Don.

I would feel the exact same way. My ex hit a deer once and thought for sure it was dead but he sprang right up and lept into the woods and the cops couldn't find it. And a bear is far sturdier than a deer and you said you only clipped it. I'm sure it's with the rest of the bears talking about his encounter with aliens.

Actually, it dragged itself a little ways into the woods and could not move any further. The cops had to give the poor thing mercy.

Sorry to hear that. Hitting any animal is never a fun experience. Back during the summer I hit a cat while riding my motorcycle. I'm pretty sure the poor moggy didn't make it. There were two of them in the road and they darted in opposite directions, making it nigh impossible for me to avoid them both. In the end, it was hit the one or lay the bike down to avoid it. I chose my safety over that of the cat. That hurt a lot, since Lynette and I have four cats of our own.

I'm sorry hun, for you and Don both. All you can do when that happens is do your best to avoid it. At least it couldn't go far enough away to have to suffer for long.

You did all you could. That's not enough to help the hurt, I know.

Oh, my...no wonder you're not feeling quite the thing. This makes our suicidal squirrel population pale in comparison. I hope you're feeling better what with the kitty loving and a little time. I'm sorry you went through that.

You know how I feel about bears, my heart breaks for you. Big hugs.
I thought this might help -- www.vitalground.org. They are a nature conservation charity which focuses on bears that i give to every year. It can't bring back the one, but you could make a wee donation toward its wild brethren, and maybe that will make you feel better.
Again, big hugs.

Oh my goodness. I'm glad you and Don are allright. I'm sorry about the bear. That does suck. :( At least it's suffering was short-lived.
