Yesterday morning, barleymash awoke to find garbage strewn about our yard and our birdfeeder broken into bits. He cleaned up the garbage, headed off to work, and called to leave me a message that our ursine visitor seemed to have returned.

I bought a new feeder and we decided to leave the back light on during the night. It's motion sensor, so there was a slim chance if the bear returned, he'd be startled and scoot off. Long shot, but hey - worth a try.

When I awoke at 4:30, I padded into the kitchen to feed the kitties and lo! the back light was on. Excitement chased away the last of my drowsiness. Bear sighting was surely imminent! I leaned past the curtains to look out onto the patio where...

an enormous racoon, quite possibly Monte, was wrapped around the wrought iron stand, one paw lifted to clasp the new feeder. I looked at him. He looked at me. I crossed my arms. And this is what he said: "Uhhhhh.... hey. I know this looks bad, but hear me out. The feeder... erm... started to fall! Yeah. And I thought, hey, nice new feeder, don't want it to get damaged, right? So I climbed up to steady it. And stuff." I rapped on the glass door with my knuckles. Monte seemed to sigh. He slid down to the ground and dutifully nosed about the seed that had fallen when the previous feeder perished. I fed the kitties, which took all of a minute, and when I looked out the door again, Monte was back up on the pole. One paw outstretched.

"You know what?" I said. "Knock yourself out."

So it wasn't a bear - this time. And I'll probably put the feeder away at night.

Sheesh! Musta been raccoon night. We had three last night. One hugemongous specimen that I don't know how the heck he got onto the enclosed porch, then two buddies, who proceeded to have a cat...er...raccoon fight. A noisy one. On the porch. And knock over my big peppermint that I nursed through the winter.

But bears=scary and racoons=cute, so isn't that better?

It's amazing how one small (Ok, not so small, but a lot smaller than a bear!!) critter can make such a big mess!!!

Reminds me of the raccoon that lived for years under my parents deck in their backyard. they have french doors in the living room, and my father loves to tell how he used to get up in the middle of the night, to see Sugarbear (the cat we had at the time, a humongous himalayan) nose to nose (through the glass) with the raccoon! We just had to make sure to always be very noisy when we took the dog out - so that the raccoon knew and had time to hide. But we all lived together very peacefully!
