Here's what you don't want to do: chip a tooth on a Friday afternoon in July, when all the emergency slots have already been filled at the one or two dentist's that don't leave their offices early or are on vacation until mid-month.

I'm so fucking sick of hearing recordings at these offices. I just want someone to fix my tooth.

it could be worse, I know. I'm not in pain (at least, not at present). I've never broken a tooth before, though, and I'm more than a bit freaked out

Ouch! I've been through dental pain on a Friday afternoon. Good luck finding someone... or at least remaining pain free until you do!

If you're not in pain, it's not *too* bad, and can probably wait til Monday. I totally understand the wanting someone to at least *look* at it right away bit. (I once broke a tooth eating popcorn at work- to the 'not in pain' point on a Friday afternoon at work - and I was scheduled to go on a weekend hiking trip *that night*. I was more than slightly nervous that I'd find myself well into the woods, 10 miles from civilization, in severe pain.)

My advice is to chew on the other side if the chip is serious enough to make you worried about possibly causing more damage. If it's more cosmetic? You're ok.

If it's resulting in a sharp edge that's cutting the inside of your mouth, head to a drugstore and find the temporary repair wax to cover it with. (If the wax is a nasty brown color, that's probably from having cloves as part of it, which is actually a good thing as it kills bacteria.)

totally done that. cracked a whole half a molar off. I blame the docs that took out the wisdom tooth that was next to it, since they were bastards to begin with...but thats another story. mine didnt hurt either, but it was sharp, so my poor tongue got cut a bit. good luck with the dentists!

I chipped two teeth, one on my 40th birthday and one a day later. I thought, "Damn! I should have gone for the.extended warranty!"

And that's just the beginning....
